Rugby League: Long wait for a win is over!

THE long wait is over for Swindon St George after they recorded their first-ever victory in their opening match of the 2009 season.

And the club, formed just last year, broke their duck in style, thumping Southampton Spitifres 42-22 in the Rugby League Conference London & South Division.

It was a sweet moment for the Saints, who were beaten twice by the same opponents last season, a campaign in which they failed to register a single triumph.

Player-coach Neil Greenwood said: “I’m so proud of this team.

“Everybody played their part in a fine win.

“Our work during training is paying off. We’ll be looking to build on this.’’ Swindon opened the scoring when Stu Catherall capitalised on space in the Southampton back line following an inside pass from Terry Martin, Scott Buchanan narrowly missing the conversion.

Danny Morgan then broke through for the second, but Swindon’s strong defence didn’t go down well with the referee and a series of penalties allowed Southampton to score two converted tries for a 12-8 lead.

Back came Swindon and player-coach Greenwood touched down, Buchanan adding the extras to give them a 14-12 half-time lead.

And Catherall and Morgan went over after the restart, Buchanan converting the second score.

Southampton closed to within two points with two more tries, but Morgan crossed twice more before an Ashley Brown try and Buchanan conversion sealed a famous Swindon win.

Swindon St George’s next game is at Croft against the Guildford Giants on Saturday (2.30pm) .

Swindon: Scott Buchanan, Gary Bandi, Ashley Brown, Danny Morgan, Liam Davis, Milo Hartley, Neil Greenwood, Richard White(capt), Gareth Davis, Terry Martin, Phil Weigh, Rychnix McKenzie, Stu Catherall, James O’Neill, Anthony Weston, Imani Bryan, Miles Bennett
