Five-star Greig leads rout of Cavaliers

GREIG O’Brien scored five tries as high-flying Swindon St George crushed Oxford Cavaliers 52-10 at Croft in the RLC London & South Division at the weekend.

The home side went behind early on when a grubber kick ricocheted off the base of the post, wrong-footing full back Stuart Knight and allowing Oxford to touch down.

But it was not long before the hosts got on the scoresheet. Ross Saville drew in the Oxford defence and his pass was run in by O’Brien for an unconverted score.

Five minutes later Swindon were ahead, as loose forward Danny Morgan ran from the base of the scrum and offloaded to O’Brien, who crashed over for another unconverted score.

The home team continued to cause their visitors problems with strong running, and on the stroke of half time a flowing passing move allowed Knight to score on the overlap, putting Dragonslayers 12-6 up at the break.

O’Brien completed his hat-trick five minutes after the resumption and Ben Bridson kicked the conversion as the hosts took firm control.

From the restart Swindon stormed up the pitch on the first four tackles, eventually allowing Knight to grab his second try under the posts, and Bridson slotted the conversion.

The game was effectively over by the 55th minute as Ben Saville charged over and Bridson added the extras to put the home side 30-6 up.

Centre Danny Morgan and Jim Roden added further scores as Swindon ran riot, with O’Brien adding a conversion for the latter score.

Oxford hit back through a controversial try but O’Brien continued his peerless afternoon by touching down for a fourth time, with Bridson converting.

O’Brien scored the best try of the match with five minutes remaining, as he handed off a number of tackles to run the length of the field and score under the posts.

Swindon coach Neil Greenwood said: “It was a great team performance, our attack worked well and our defence only missed a few tackles. Things are improving all the time.”

St George are away to Greenwich Admirals this weekend in a top-of-the-table clash.
