SUPERMARINE return to Dorset and Wilts 1 North action for the first time in two weeks tomorrow as they make the trip to Calne, with player-coach Sean Millwaters insisting his side will not be ring-rusty from their lengthy break.
Marine’s last outing was the 19-7 defeat to Melksham a fortnight ago, but Millwaters has overseen several high-quality training sessions since and believes his teammates are more than prepared for what will undoubtedly be a stern test against lofty opposition.
“It will be a tough game, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
“When we played them earlier in the season we lost narrowly but we should have won.
“It was a case then of letting them score twice before we decided to play rugby.
“This time I’m confident we can turn them over.
“It doesn’t matter that we haven’t had a game for a couple of weeks. Our training sessions have been hard and well-attended and everyone is ready to go.”
Marine were edged out 17-7 by tomorrow’s opponents back in November, but Millwaters, pictured right, claims his side have improved throughout the season.
And the scrum-half wants his team to show the same kind of fluidity and efficiency which overwhelmed Avonvale a month ago as they bid to reclaim a place in the top six.
“We’re not worried about their gameplan,” he said.
“Calne have a pretty simple gameplan, but they carry it out well. We’ve been working on drills to counter that and put the pressure back on them.
“We’ve had some fairly inconsistent performances this season, but if we play like we did against Avonvale then we’ll be fairly happy.”
After tinkering slightly with the front row due to the continued absence of prop Paul Bishop, Millwaters and head coach John Godsell are sweating over the state of fly-half Nick Moulden’s hand.
Should Moulden be unavailable Matt Dickens will be selected in the half-backs, and Millwaters is safe in the knowledge that Marine have the strength in depth to cover any potential absentees.
“I’m quite happy with the state of things,” he said.
“To be honest we’re just looking forward to playing.
“It’s been a while.”
