SUPERMARINE player-coach Sean Millwaters openly admits housing a soft spot for former club Wootton Bassett, but the scrum-half is intent on upsetting the Stoneover Lane side’s impressive recent run when the two meet in Dorset and Wilts One North tomorrow.
Bassett’s second string have won their last three fixtures in succession, a remarkable achievement considering they had failed to pick up a single point in the opening four months of the season, and Millwaters insists his teammates are well aware of the threat posed by his old side.
“We’re not going there under any false impressions,” he said.
“They are on a very good little run at the moment and it will no doubt be a hard game.”
Since the departure of former coach Dave Sullivan and the subsequent return of key players to their starting line-up, Bassett have added an extra edge to their rugby - something Millwaters is not ignorant to.
But the Marine man is confident, after last weekend’s spirited defeat of Calne, his team can bring their hosts back down to earth with a pretty painful bump.
“The guys who have come back into their team have changed the dynamic of it quite a lot,” said Millwaters of a Bassett 15 which has re-invented itself in the half-backs and centres over the past month.
“In the end the result is going to come down to who wants it more.
“We’re up for it, but we know they will be too. We have seen this season that anyone in this league can beat anyone else on their day, and that means tomorrow will be very hard to call.”
Marine will be without influential number eight Gary Trevet for the encounter, meaning George Cowley will slip into the middle of the back row.
Matt Dickens remains at 10 but winger Chris Evans is unavailable, with Paul Prentice taking his spot out wide.
Millwaters claims Supermarine are as prepared as they can be for the contest, and while on any other matchday the number nine would be willing Bassett onto victory, tomorrow he will have his eyes firmly set on extending the 10-point gap between the sides.
“We have had minimum disruption during the week and everything is looking good for the game,” he said.
“It is true that I have a certain empathy for Wootton Bassett as I spent 13 out of the past 20 seasons there and I have good friends there still.
“But just for tomorrow I will be wishing all the luck on their first team and none on their seconds.”
