Marine love it when a plan comes together

SUPERMARINE secured sixth place and ended a season of transformation with a bang, after a comprehensive 54-10 away victory at Trowbridge 2nds in Dorset & Wilts 1 North.

Centre Matt Dickens ran in five tries as John Godsell’s men overwhelmed their hosts, who had started one place above them in the league table.

After the game, player-coach Sean Millwaters lauded the style of rugby maintained by Marine over the course of the 80 minutes as he looked back on a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for a side who narrowly avoided relegation last term.

“We just rolled on our game from last week, playing good expansive rugby and they just couldn’t handle us,” he said.

“We got the bell out wide and kept running at them, and it worked nicely.

“In the end we’ve got our top six spot, which is what we targeted at the beginning of the year, and for everyone involved at the club that is a big achievement.”

Dickens set the tone from the first minute as he touched down for the opening score having been sent clear by Sean Higgins, and James Atherton, Simon Mawer and Mick Coe also registered for the visitors as Trowbridge were rendered impotent in an offensive sense throughout.

For Mawer and Coe the tries represented their first scores of the season, a fitting way to end a rewarding campaign.

And although Millwaters harbours reservations over how far Marine could have gone this season had the odd bit of luck fallen in their favour, the scrum-half knows how good a foundation the squad has laid for next year’s push for a top three berth.

“The only semi-negative reflection I have is that maybe we could have been in the top three if we had got the rub of the green or if some results had gone our way,” he said.

“But in the end we’ve set our target and hit our target and played good rugby along the way.

“Next year we are definitely looking to get in that top three.”

Millwaters, who racked up 14 points on Saturday, paid tribute to the work of head coach Godsell.

“John is really happy with the way the season has gone and we’re already looking forward to next year,” he said.

“He puts in a lot of work and it has really shown.”
