SUPERMARINE head coach Sean Millwaters was pleased to see his side bounce back from a disappointing week with a 44-10 win over lowly Fairford.
Marine were beaten 25-12 at Swindon 2nds last Saturday before losing the Dorset and Wilts Shield 32-10 to Weymouth on Wednesday night, but made amends with seven tries to comfortably beat the Dorset & Wilts One North strugglers.
“We went into this game with the right mentality, and we were very pleased to bounce back after last week,” Millwaters told the Advertiser.
“Fairford are struggling in the league and I think we were pleased to be playing someone like them rather than Chippenham or Minety at the top of the league, but that did not mean they would roll over.
“We played well even though they had a good spell for 10 or 15 minutes, and we relaxed a little and allowed them to score a try in the second half.
“We played the way we want to play, attacking the spaces, and that was very pleasing.”
Supermarine opened the scoring through hooker Jamie Barrett’s try, before Stu Dawson increased the lead with a penalty.
Another penalty set up the second try of the afternoon, as a quick tap from Robin Smith allowed Millwaters to dive over.
Fairford scored a try of their own from a lineout, before Barrett added his second after good work from Matt Dickens and Alan Milton.
Pete Mabbott got the second half off to a good start as he danced his way through the Fairford line to score, before the visitors added their second try of the afternoon.
Supermarine were never under threat, though, and Simon Mawer stretched their lead again to score under the posts.
Milton added his 18th try of the season soon after, before Jeff Barrett put the gloss on the win with his 10th of the campaign.
Supermarine Ladies completed a good weekend for the club after coming from behind to beat London Welsh 25-15.
Three early tries gave Welsh a 15-0 lead, before Candy Inskip pulled a try back to make it 15-5 at half time.
The second half saw Supermarine up their game and this paid off when full back Steph Watts scored within the first 10 minutes, before Corinne Hunter levelled the scores.
With time running out, fly half Natalie Williams went on a superb run which saw her cross the whitewash to secure the game, much to the delight of captain Claire Legg: “Supermarine had a great battle in the second half to come back and win.
“We showed fantastic team spirit,” she said.
