SWINDON Robins could be set to benefit from a shake-up in the Elite League table following the sad closure of Birmingham Brummies yesterday.

The BSPA announced yesterday that the Perry Barr club will not be able to complete the season, with financial problems meaning the Brummies haven’t taken to the track since June 30 and haven’t raced at home since June 11.

While the governing body have yet to officially announce what will happen to the Brummies league points, and those gained by the teams riding against Birmingham, it is likely they will all be expunged from the league table.

If that happens, given the Robins have yet to complete a fixture against Birmingham this season, Alun Rossiter’s side could be set to move closer to the play-offs.

Wolverhampton, who currently sit directly above Swindon in sixth, would lose four points, putting the Robins above them, while they would then only be two behind Coventry and three behind fourth-placed Eastbourne, with both teams losing three.

Leaders King’s Lynn would have 10 points removed from their total, while Lakeside in second would lose seven.

“I'm gutted about this outcome, but sadly there is no alternative,” BSPA chairman Alex Harkess said.

“When I met with the loyal group of Birmingham supporters last week I believed there was genuine hope, but sadly things have changed over the last few days.

“As an association, we have done everything possible to try and ensure the continuation of speedway but with no promoter willing to take the club forward I'm afraid the club is now closed for business.

“I feel for the Birmingham riders and supporters who have been a real credit through this ordeal and we all hope this is not the last time we see speedway at Perry Barr Stadium.”
