FORMER Swindon Robin Simon Gustafsson has decided to call tian end to his time in Kevlar after losing his passion for the sport.

Gustafsson was part of Alun Rossiter’s side that reached the Elite League play-offs last season, but the Swede himself endured an inconsistent season.

In a revealing interview in the Speedway Star, Gustafsson offers an explanation as to why he was not firing on all cylinders in his time with the Robins.

The 24-year-old paints a lonely picture of a young man going from airport to airport and how he has become disillusioned with the sport he once cared so dearly for.

“I got fed up with it. I lost my inspiration. It had been going that way for the last couple of years,” said Gustafsson.

“England has been half-decent, even good sometimes, but other countries have not been so good.

“I tried to be enthusiastic, but I was losing that enthusiasm and I have been feeling more and more like that over probably the last three years.

“I had to try and motivate myself before every meeting, it just wasn’t there naturally. I think that’s why the results did not turn out as good as I wanted them to be.

“When you’re not scoring points and making money it’s not much fun. Of course you’ve got to sacrifice a lot, doing all the travelling, all the airports and time on the road.

“It’s a dangerous sport, if you’re not into it 100 per cent I don’t think you should do it. If I got badly injured this year I would not have felt at all good about it.

“I’ve not been on a bike since my last since my last meeting in England, I’ve not had time.

“I’ve sold most of speedway stuff and I don’t regret my decision at all. Maybe I will feel differently when the season starts – but I don’t think I will.”
