ALUN Rossiter says his Great Britain team can come away from their World Cup campaign with their heads held high after they narrowly missed out on qualification for the final this evening.

Rossiter’s GB side finished second in tonight’s race-off in Vojens, as Poland stormed to victory to bag the last place in Saturday’s final.

Team captain Tai Woffinden had a perfect night in Denmark, with six heat wins from six rides – including one as a tactical – to deliver 21 of his team’s 43 points.

However, that was still short of Poland’s total of 48, while the USA were third on 22, with a three-man Russian team returning just 11 points.

Youngster Robert Lambert claimed two heat wins from four rides for eight points overall, while Chris Harris and Danny King collected seven each.

Although disappointed at missing out on a place in the final, team manager Rossiter believes his troops could not have given any more and was pleased with a good week’s work, which also saw them finish second behind Australia in Monday’s SWC event two.

“I think we can come away with our heads held high. We’re just not quite strong enough, that’s all,” said Swindon Robins team manager Rossiter.

“Tai was brilliant. I couldn’t fault him, he was on another level tonight. That was a big plus for us.

“If Robert carries on like that then I think he has got the world at his feet. He has got an old head on young shoulders.

“I couldn’t ask for any more from the others either. Chris and Danny didn’t have their best nights but they still gave it 100 per cent.

“If we could have gone into the last four heats one point up then I could have had a chance with the last pick of who I put my riders against.

“But it wasn’t to be and when you’re going in blind it’s very hard and they knew where they could put their riders at the end.

“I’m not too disappointed, just a little bit as we gave a good account of ourselves and handled ourselves very well.”
