SWINDON Robins team boss Alun Rossiter was impressed by the team spirit his side showed last night as they continue their charge back into play-off contention.

On a track where Swindon have not recorded a win at since 2012 Rossiter was rightly conservative in his approach, but knew that Swindon had a great opportunity to put the record straight.

As the rain held off Pole Grzegorz Zengota led the comeback as he recorded an impressive 16 point haul, supported by the reliable Darcy Ward (11+1) and battling performances from reserve Charles Wright (9) and skipper Troy Batchelor (8+2).

The only blip, on what was otherwise a perfect evening for the Robins, was the fall of Nick Morris, who was returning from injury.

The fall in heat seven, where he ended up flipping off his bike in the first bend, saw him re-open the wound on his elbow that has kept him out for two weeks.

“We had to win this one tonight. I didn’t put too much on the boys, but I said to them that we really needed a win here tonight,” Rossiter said.

“The opportunity was here for winning, we knew that they were a little bit vulnerable and they hadn’t been on the best of form.

“But when you look at the way Freddie (Lindgren) came out of the gates, and Jacob Thorssell was on fire, I was worried.

“Our boys just stepped up to the mark and they were outstanding.”

It was a tight meeting for the opening six heats of the meet as there was nothing to separate the two sides going into heat seven.

After winning his opening race, Zengota had it all to do, after Nick Morris came off his bike in the first bend of the first lap to rule him out of the rest of the night with a recurrence of his elbow injury, which could rule him out of tomorrow night’s meeting at Poole Pirates.

Zengota could not prevent the first maximum of the night for the hosts, and the evening looked like it was getting away from the visitors after heat 10, when Ricky Wells and Frederik Lindgren secured the host’s second 5-1 of the night.

However, that seemed to spark the Robins into life and Zengota, supported by Batchelor, bit straight back with a maximum of their own.

That was followed up by a second of the night for the Alun Rossiter’s side as Lewis Blackbird fell on the first lap for guest Ashley Morris and Charles Wright to secure a one-two.

Aussie Ace Darcy Ward was able to push home the advantage, with fellow countryman Batchelor fighting to the end to get a vital fourth point in heat 13.

The meeting was all but over when Zengota won his fourth race of the night in heat 14, with Batchelor following him home in second, before a fourth maximum in five races for Zengota and Ward in the final heat wrapped up the points.

“Heat 10 really was the turning point,” added Rossiter.

“They got the 5-1, which you wouldn’t have expected with Darcy, you would have thought a 4-2 or a 3-3.

“Then we went 5-1, 5-1, 4-2, 5-1, 5-1, which really says it all.

“The atmosphere in the pits tonight was really buoyed.

“I think when Nick went down, instead of dropping their heads, they raised their heads and really lifted it up and it was outstanding.

“Zengi, scoring 16 points, and he is always telling me how he doesn’t like the track.

“I spoke to him before the meeting about how to ride it and how to attack it and he took it on board and he was brilliant.

“A special mention to Charles Wright as well he was great, and Ashley Morris.

“Reserves are vitally important. I have got struggles with the reserves this week and that is where you can win and lose a meeting.”
