SWINDON Robins have been handed a fitness boost with Nick Morris set for an early return from injury and he could feature in next Thursday’s clash against Elite League leaders Coventry Bees at the Abbey.

Morris was forced to miss two Swindon meetings after suffering a deep cut to his elbow in a fall while guesting for Somerset Rebels in the Premier League on July 10, with his initial comeback then proving premature after the Australian aggravated that problem in the win away at Wolverhampton Wolves last Monday.

The 21-year-old revealed on social media that he was expecting to face a month on the sidelines in the wake of his injury setback at Monmore Green and was subsequently ruled out of the Robins’ three other fixtures last week.

Although he will also miss Monday’s fixture against Wolves as the Robins travel back to the Black Country, team boss Alun Rossiter now expects him to be available to face the Bees three days later.

The Abbey chief is still working on a replacement to guest in the Midlands but is trying to secure the services of Great Britain rider Chris Harris for that meet.

“We’re looking at getting Nick back for Thursday, hopefully he will be fine for then,” said Rossiter.

“We’ll make sure he is all bandaged up properly and that should mean it’s fine.

“We are still looking at who we might be able to get in for Monday.

“It could be Chris Harris but we’re still talking to Coventry about that.

“Hopefully we should know more by the end of the week.”

The Robins head back to Wolverhampton looking for a third league win on the bounce – and fifth in the last six fixtures – after finishing last week with back-to-back home and away victories over Lakeside Hammers.

The 11 points they collected last week have strengthened their pursuit of a place in the end-of-season play-offs and they are now even within touching distance of third-placed King’s Lynn Stars.

Rossiter says he does not mind where his team finish in the table, just as long as it is inside the top four.

“It was a fantastic week. Really we were looking to try to win one of those away meetings if we could but to win two was amazing,” said Rossiter.

“It’s given us all a real boost and we were all obviously delighted with how the whole week panned out.

“It’s opening up a bit for us now and we’re in really good shape but I tend not to look at it that closely.

“Whether it’s third or fourth I don’t really think that much about it, just so long as we’re in that play-off position.”
