CHARLES Wright has his sights set slightly higher than a reserve spot after being unveiled as the Swindon Robins’ first signing for 2016.

The 27-year-old spent his first full season as an Elite League rider with the Robins last term and, following an impressive debut, is hungry for more.

Changes to the draft system for next season will see reserve riders given averages after four meetings and allow them to push on into the main body of the team.

Although he will start the campaign in the bottom two slots for Alun Rossiter’s side, Wright is eager to make a swift jump into the top five.

“It’s good to be back. It’s a great club and was a big honour to ride for them last season and I’m really pleased to be able to do it again next year,” said Wright.

“Now it’s done I’m already really looking forward to the 2016 season starting.

“Rosco had already talked to me and said he’d like to have me back but it depended on what happened with the picks. It must have worked out how he wanted it and it was pretty easy to say I’d come back.

“The fast-track system has changed a bit this year as after four meetings you can change the team and we can move up.

“I want to push on as much as I can and hopefully I can move on into that main team and race against better riders and test myself more.

“I’m not sure who the other reserve might be, I know a few guys have been taken already but others are still available. I will just see what happens.

“I am happy to work with anyone and I’m sure whoever it is we will work hard to form a good partnership for the team.”

Wright split his Robins responsibilities with riding for the Somerset Rebels in the Premier League last season, and is set to continue those shared commitments in 2016.

After helping both sides reach the play-offs in their respective divisions, Wright is more than confident he has what it takes to mix it in the top tier.

“I had a dabble at the Elite League the year before and then decided to take on a full speedway career for 2015,” said Wright.

“I was really happy with how last year went and now I am just looking to push on and improve again.

“I’m pretty confident in what I can do on a bike. We are up against a lot of the same riders in the Premier League who I beat day in, day out, so it isn’t a lot of difference.

“The main thing when I ride for Swindon is that the heat leaders are usually Grand Prix riders so it’s great to be up against guys like that. I just try to learn as much as I can.”
