SWINDON Robins ace Nick Morris clinched victory in the second round of the Australian Championship in Victoria this morning.

Morris, who will form part of the Robins 2016 line-up after a successful season last year, won the A final at Undera to boost his hopes of lifting the overall title after the final two rounds on Friday and Saturday.

“I was stoked to go out there and come away with the win,” Morris said. “I’m back in the game now after a tough first round so I’m really pleased.

“I’ve got to move onto the next one now, and hopefully I can keep this form going in the last two rounds to come out on top.”

But there was disappointment for both of his Swindon teammates Justin Sedgmen and Josh Grajczonek, both of whom withdrew from the meeting after falls.

Grajczonek was withdrawn after a first bend tangle with Kieran Sproule in heat four whilst Sedgmen, who also suffered a crash in the opening round, spectacularly high-sided in heat eight.

He eventually pulled out with a shoulder injury – and said: “I'm devastated with how tonight has gone. I wanted to put pressure on the guys at the top, and I was confident I could do that, but it's just another night to forget.

“The track was terrible from the start and I think by the end there was six riders who had been withdrawn including myself.

“I have a lot of pain in my shoulder and when I get back to Mildura I'll go and get it checked out. My aim is to race in the final two rounds, I want to win one, especially at Mildura.

“Let's see what the next couple of days bring, I'm hopeful that it's nothing too serious and we can get back on track with a good result in Gillman.”

There were no such problems for Morris, who opened his account with a victory in the second heat of the meeting and then followed up by finishing runner up to Sam Masters - who had finished overall runner up in the first meeting - in heat six.

Third place in a twice rerun heat nine - due to collisions between Max Fricke and Jordan Stewart - followed but Morris was a winner again in the 16th race of the night, seeing off the challenge of meeting one winner Rohan Tungate.

A victory in heat 19 secured the Robins man's place in the final where, up against Mason Campton, Masters and the eventually-excluded Brady Kurtz, Morris triumphed.

Morris’ victory earned him 16 points, which puts him joint fifth in the standings with Campton on 25.

Top heat scorer Kurtz is joint-second with Fricke and Kurri Kurri winner Tungate on 26 points.

The Championship continues in Gillman, Adelaide, on Friday and concludes in Mildura on Saturday.
