RESERVE Charles Wright hopes that a year’s experience of riding the Abbey Stadium track will enable him to become a key cog in the Swindon Robins engine this year.

Wright enjoyed a solid first season with the Robins in 2015 after being selected through the Elite League draft system and team manager Alun Rossiter swiftly swooped to sign him up for another year.

The 27-year-old, who will split his time with Swindon by also riding for Somerset Rebels in the Premier League, admits it took him a while to get to grips with the Blunsdon track but is confident he has it mastered to make a big impact this year.

“There was a big gap between the home meetings last year and it was hard to get the set-up right,” said Wright.

“Changing stuff in your motors, trying different stuff, always makes it hard but by the end of the year I seemed to crack the track and had good speed.

“This year I’ve invested in a new engine, my equipment is better, and I have a few more sponsors on board too, which always helps.

“I am 27 now and I am only getting better, so I am heading the right way. As long as I am not going down, that’s the best thing.”

This season, reserve riders have the added incentive of winning a place in the five-man main roster should they put a good run of form together and Wright is looking forward to that challenge.

“That’s good pushing forwards, that’s what I am pushing to do and that’s what I want to do. I want to build on my career and race against top riders,” said Wright.

“It should be a good year, I am looking forward to it. With the riders we have got this year, it should be a good laugh and on track, we should do the business.”
