JOSH Grajczonek was chuffed to help the Swindon Robins put a spring back in their step by swatting Coventry Bees.

Like the remainder of his new team-mates, the 26-year-old was seemingly powerless to prevent the Robins crashing to a heavy 61-31 defeat at reigning champions Poole Pirates – Grajczonek’s former club – in their season-opener on Good Friday but things went much more swimmingly for Swindon in their first home meeting of 2016 on Thursday.

Grajczonek was in red-hot form with a 12+2 total as Alun Rossiter’s troops dispatched Coventry 55-35, with his slick overtake of former Robins captain Hans Andersen providing a standout moment, and the Queenslander was delighted to see his team provide an instant response to their Poole pain.

“It was a good to get a good win over Coventry. They’re no slouches around here and we managed to pull 20 points, which is perfect,” said Grajczonek.

“We manged to get the ball rolling towards the end of the meeting and Rosco’s pretty happy with all us boys.

“I managed to get a good win in my first race and that always sets you off in a good frame of mind.

“I got a second in my next one, which was alright – I just felt like I didn’t have enough pace so we changed the bike a little bit and it was pretty good after that “There was a lot of dirt on the track, which is good because in the races I didn’t get a good start, I sort of stuck it in the dirt.

“I managed to pass Hans (in heat 10) round the outside, which was good for me because he stuck to the inside and knew I was there but I switched my lines pretty quick and managed to get away from him.

“(Against Poole) I didn’t really get going until my last two races. Poole’s always tough to go to as an away rider but we can’t really say that was our downfall.

“We should have been ready for it. They had a couple of meetings under their sleeve but at the end of the day, we’re meant to be hitting the ground running and we want to be in the play-offs come the end of the year.

“We got a kick up the backside after Poole from Rosco and everyone, and we were kicking our own backsides as well because you don’t go there to score 31 points – you go there to keep it close and get a point.

“At the end of the day, it was what it was and we bounced back in a good style.”
