SWINDON Robins finished a difficult week on a positive note with a gutsy win away at Leicester Lions this evening.

Alun Rossiter’s men had been beaten home and away by reigning Elite League champions Poole Pirates already this week, while bottom side Leicester also triumphed at the Abbey Stadium on Thursday.

However, the Robins were able to avenge that final loss at Beaumont Park tonight courtesy of a stellar display from skipper Jason Doyle, who scored 17+1 points from six rides to inspire his team to victory.

Swindon skipper Doyle laid down the gauntlet in the opening heat of the night, with a blistering start from the gate setting him up for an imperious win and a track record time. Team-mate Josh Grajczonek failed to make an impression at the back, though, and the points were shared.

The visitors looked like they might get an advantage in heat two when Lions guest Ludvig Lindgren failed to get off the line due to an engine problem but Josh Auty left the Robins reserves for dead to ensure another shared heat.

The exclusion of Leicester’s Aaron Summers in heat three to hand Swindon the advantage and Doyle made the most of it by romping clear for an easy win. Justin Sedgmen comfortable held off the remaining Lion, Davey Watt, behind.

Nick Morris made it three wins from four for Swindon as he muscled his way to the front into the first bend and swiftly dropped the pack but again it was honours even as Nielsen was well off the pace.

Leicester hit straight back with a maximum of their own thanks to a fine effort by guest Lindgren but a beauty of a ride from Sedgmen in heat seven put Swindon back in the driving seat, backed up by a fine defensive race from Doyle to make sure of the 5-1.

A corking battle took place between Patrick Hougaard and Morris on the opening lap of the next, which the Lions number one got the better of on the top bend. However, Sedgmen was able to split the heat in third.

After a slow start to the night, Grajczonek came to the party for Swindon with a classy ride in heat eight. He led from the gates and was never threatened up to the line.

Morris tangled with Lindgren on the first bend of heat nine, with the Robin taking a tumble to leave a lonely ride for Nielsen as Nicolai Klindt led home a maximum for the home side.

But in heat 10, Doyle nailed the start to set up a routine win, with Grajczonek the only man in the field to even get close to hand the visitors a 5-1 victory.

The teams continued trading blows as another maximum followed in the next race, this time inspired by Leicester's Klindt. Swindon’s Morris was a faller again, going down attempting a daring pass on Hougaard on the final lap.

Lions then took the lead for the first time on the night after making it back-to-back 5-1s in heat 12. Swindon’s Charles Wright and the home pair were neck-and-neck heading into the first bend but Lindgren nudged ahead, with Auty able to sneak in behind.

Swindon’s response was emphatic. SKipper Doyle knew it was all or nothing and a dream start put him in command as Sedgmen followed him home to complete the perfect result.

Grajczonek then put the visitors in control heading into the final heat as he nailed the start in race 14 to leaves the Lions in his wake off the line, although they were able to share the points.

The Lions pair thought they could snatch a result in the final heat of the night but Doyle said no. The Robins skipper appeared from nowhere to storm through and take the win and wrap up the overall victory for his side.
