WOLVERHAMTPON Wolves inflicted a first defeat in five for the Swindon Robins as they romped to a 62-30 victory at home.

Swindon were always behind from heat one and struggled to secure a single race win, with their only success coming in heat 10, when skipper Jason Doyle was on a tactical ride.

Swindon went into the meeting knowing that a win of any kind would lift them to the summit of the Elite League table.

However, with Wolves having not been beaten on home soil this term at Monmore Green, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Alun Rossiter’s side.

Rohan Tungate got a great start in the opening race but he was lucky not to take out teammate Doyle, who in turn pushed Fredrik Lindgren wide in bend one.

Peter Karlsson took full advantage to take the heat win and Lindgren was able to overtake Tungate on lap two to secure a two-point advantage.

In heat two, Charles Wright battled his way to the first corner in the lead but Max Clegg took a tight inside line and came out of bend two in front for another two-point heat win.

Justin Sedgmen gated well in heat three but had problems down the back-straight.

However, the race was stopped when Jacob Thorsell flew into bend three, lifted coming out and couldn't avoid the air fence to see him disqualified.

Sedgmen looked to move at the re-start but it didn't help as Sam Masters got away perfectly to nullify the Swindon pair.

Nick Morris stuttered off the line in heat four but both Wolves riders went too deep out of bend two and Morris took the win comfortably.

However, Branford cut a frustrated figure at the end as he fought hard for third but Clegg was able to shut the door on the penultimate lap.

Clegg flew out of the gate for the lead of heat five and Karlsson was able to keep Tungate behind him for the hosts’ first maximum of the night, while Wright did well to keep on his bike out of bend two.

It was a messy start to heat six and Grajczonek was the victim as he went into the air fence after getting too close to Sam Masters and was disqualified.

Doyle and Masters got very close to each other in the first bend of the re-start and with them occupied, Howarth snuck underneath to claim the win.

It looked like a jump start from Thorssell in heat seven but the race was allowed to continue and Lindgren took the lead out of bend two but Sweden’s Thorssell couldn't hold off Sedgmen down the back straight as they settled for a two-point win.

Tungate started well in heat nine but on his inside, Masters did just as well and took the lead.

Howarth got out of shape out of bend two on lap two but held on to claim third place and extend the hosts’ lead to 14 points.

Morris had another hopping start in heat nine but he did enough to take the lead, however Branford fell on bend two of lap two and was subsequently disqualified and the race was re-run.

Morris was not so good at a second time of asking and the two Wolves riders take full advantage to pull 18 points clear.

Thorssell was left unhappy as he was disqualified for falling in bend one of heat 10 and was disqualified as a result.

Masters had another fine start in the re-run and he held his bike well after taking the inside line through bend two to beat Doyle and, with the Swindon skipper on a tactical ride, Swindon claimed their first heat win of the night.

Wolves responded immediately as Lindgren got away well to take the lead in heat 11 and Karlsson flew into bend three to keep hold of second spot and keep Sedgmen behind him for a third maximum of the night.

Howarth continued his fine evening against his former club as he got away well in heat 12 but he was pushed all the way by Wright, while Branford continued to struggle at the back with little control.

Wolves had the starts nailed all night and in heat 13, Lindgren and Thorssell both flew away from the tapes and there was no way through for either Doyle or Grajczonek.

It was a case of déjà vu in heat 14 as Karlsson got away well and Masters was there alongside all the way before taking over the lead on the final lap as Swindon had no answers to another maximum.

Tungate showed some fight in the final heat as he battled all the way on lap one to take the lead, however, Lindgren claimed the win on the penultimate lap to wrap up a flat performance from the Robins.
