SWINDON Robins boss Alun Rossiter had cause for a double celebration this evening after a near perfect evening for his side at the Abbey Stadium.

First, a packed Blunsdon track were applauding the news that skipper Jason Doyle had agreed a new two-year contract to remain at the club before the cheers got even louder at the end of the night as the Robins took a big step towards the Elite League play-offs.

Swindon produced a stunning display of speedway to thrash bottom side Leicester Lions 57-33 and were further boosted by a 48-42 defeat for fellow top-four hopefuls Lakeside Hammers at King’s Lynn Stars.

Those results have pushed the Robins six points clear of the Hammers in the final play-off position and they now need just a point from either of their final two meetings away at Belle Vue Aces or Lakeside to guarantee their spot.

It continued a brilliant week for the Robins following the announcement on Monday that work on their new stadium had finally been given the go-ahead.

“It’s great news about Jason and it’s been a very good week all round,” said Rossiter.

“We have almost made the play-offs but not quite. I think we need to get a point on the road, so we know what we have got to do.

“Jason is great. He is battling for the world championship and who knows, we could have a world champion in our ranks next year.

“And with the news of the stadium, it shows you where the club is going. We are going forwards and it’s important we keep doing that.

“Jason leads from the front but we also need the rest of the boys to pick up points too. He drags everyone along and he has been very helpful in the pits – he’s been a good captain.

“I have had no problems with him, he has been fantastic this year.”

Tonight was the Robins’ final home meeting of the regular season, meaning they will have to pull off a result on the road to rubber-stamp their play-off place.

Rossiter says he would prefer to get it done and dusted at Belle Vue on September 14 rather than have to sweat it out in the season finale at Lakeside two days later.

“Neither of them are going to be easy but it would be nice to get it done at Belle Vue otherwise we are going to end up having to go to Lakeside and get something,” said Rossiter.

“But our destiny us up to us now so we have just got to do what we can.”
