NICK Morris hopes the Swindon Robins’ two-week hiatus does not hurt their chances of finishing off the job and securing a place in the Elite League play-offs.

Alun Rossiter’s side put themselves on the cusp of guaranteeing a top-four finish in the Elite League last Thursday with a dominant 57-33 victory over bottom side Leicester Lions at the Abbey Stadium.

A solitary losing point will now do from either of their final two away fixtures at Belle Vue Aces and Lakeside Hammers for the Robins to ensure they are in the fight for honours at the end of the season.

However, the first chance they have to do that is when they visit Belle Vue’s National Speedway Stadium next Wednesday, almost a full fortnight since the team last took to the track together.

The Robins riders are expected to keep busy between now and then, with Australian ace Morris planning to practice in Poland before the next meeting, in an effort to make sure race rustiness does not hinder their performance.

“We have still got a bit of work to do but I am sure the boys can do it and we will just give it our best shot,” said Morris.

“We are all going pretty solid around the Abbey at the moment so that is important before the play-offs but we have got to make sure we make them first of all and then we will just see what happens.

“We have got two weeks off, which isn’t ideal but we will just try to carry that good form on when we are next together.

“We have got to get the boys fired up. They are doing plenty of riding and I am going to Poland to practice. We will give it our best shot and see where it gets us.”

Morris will be keen to carry on his stunning form from that Leicester meeting, in which he posted a perfect night’s work with a 15-point maximum.

He owes a debt to fellow Aussie Josh Grajczonek for that strong return, though, as he let Morris pass him on the final lap of the final race to complete his haul.

“I have been having a tough year but I pulled it together when I needed to,” said Morris.

“I’ve had one or two (15-point maximums) before but I don’t think I have had one here at the Abbey.

“It’s always nice to win races, especially here in Swindon and I won a few that night so I can’t complain with how I got on.

“I said to Josh before the race that if we are on a 5-1 to let me through so I can get the max – I would have done the same for him.

“It was the last home meeting of the year before the play-offs so it is good to get a win and hopefully keep the fans happy.”
