A POINT will do for the Swindon Robins when they travel to the Belle Vue Aces tonight but team manager Alun Rossiter would rather see his side go for the whole shebang.

Having seen a trip to the Aces farcically called off at the last minute on August 19, Rossiter and the Robins return to the National Speedway Stadium (7.30pm start) for their penultimate fixture of the season with the opportunity to secure their place in the play-offs.

A losing point would be enough to rubber-stamp a top-four spot but should the Robins not get the job done, they would be left requiring the same outcome from their trip to the Lakeside Hammers on Friday – that clash would be a straight shootout, with the Essex outfit the only team that can mathematically pip Swindon.

Naturally, Rossiter would rather see the Robins get themselves over the line against the Elite League’s table-toppers in Manchester tonight and feels that it is vital that his side achieve a whole lot more than that.

“We’ve got to go there looking for a win. It’s great that we only need a point but we should be trying to win,” said the Swindon chief.

“We need to get ourselves into the habit of winning because that’s going to be really important for the play-offs.

“I don’t want to just get to the play-offs and then bow out. That’s what we’ve done in the last few years and I want us to go one better and get in that final.

“It’s going to be difficult because Belle Vue are a great side and their reserves are going well – we need to get our reserves going because that’s going to be really important for us.”

The Aces have won their last four home meetings and beat Poole Pirates 48-45 on Monday night.

The Robins are set to travel to Manchester at full-strength but only after captain Jason Doyle had an injury scare on Monday night.

The Aussie star, who triumphed at the German Grand Prix last weekend, suffered a heavy fall during Rospiggarna’s play-off victory over Dackarna in Sweden’s Elitserien league but was due to ride in the second leg on Tuesday night.

Rohan Tungate moves into the heat-leader position at number three for tonight’s fixture, with Josh Grajczonek dropping to number four.

Doyle will definitely be missing when Swindon take on a Premier League select side in a challenge match at the Abbey Stadium on Thursday evening.
