EMIL Grondal is not daunted by the prospect of trying to make the grade in the top-tier of British speedway after being signed up by Swindon Robins.

The 21-year-old Dane is one of five new recruits for Abbey Stadium boss Alun Rossiter as he looks to plot a route back towards a top-four finish after missing out last year.

Grondal has primarily ridden in the second tier in the UK, spending the last two seasons at Peterborough Panthers, and he thinks the time is now right to make the step up.

“I have been in Peterborough the last two seasons, which has been great but it has been tough as well,” said Grondal.

“When Rosco gave me the opportunity to be part of Swindon, I was grateful for that. I am looking forward to trying something new.

“This a going to be whole new level but I can’t wait to get started with the boys. I am going to do the best I can and try to learn as much as I can as well.

“We have a very strong team at the top and at the bottom, and if everybody performs, I am sure it is going to be a great season.

“I am going to start at number six and it’s nice to start down there while I get to know the track, and hopefully I can get a bit of a confidence down there as well.”

The Robins do not have to worry about double bookings for Grondal as he will not ride for a second-tier British club at all in 2017, with the Danish youngster’s only other commitment being to Grindsted back in his homeland.

“In England, I have kept my focus only on Swindon. I will just be concentrating on the Danish league, the top league in England and the U25 national team in Denmark,” said Grondal.

“It takes a lot of energy to be travelling between a couple of different countries but that’s what you learn from.

“For me, it’s very important to be part of British speedway because that’s where you really progress as a rider. There are a lot of different tracks and it takes my speedway learning to a whole new level.”
