CLUBS will hold talks with tyre suppliers Mitas Moto today following safety fears in the opening meetings of the 2017 SGB Premiership season.

Tyres have been a major talking point in the first few weeks of the campaign, with a heated debate taking place before Swindon Robins’ meeting with Poole Pirates on Easter Sunday, with both clubs differing on the preferred option they wanted to race on.

Many have been outspoken about the condition of the yellow-walled tyre compound, including Robins skipper Jason Doyle, with a meeting scheduled for today that should address the concerns raised.

Swindon team manager Alun Rossiter is keen to see a swift solution to the problem found, complaining that it is dangerous to ride on tyres that degrade at such a rapid rate.

“We all had a bunch of red tyres and Poole decided that they didn’t want to use them,” he said.

“It all backfired because all the tyres fell apart.

“It is an issue that has to be sorted out right now, we can’t carry on like this. The tyres are falling apart, there’s no ifs and buts, it can’t continue like this.

“We’re having to use the spare ones and now, even the spare ones are knackered.

“We’ve got to really sort it out and something has got to be done quickly.”

Swindon head to Somerset Rebels tomorrow, a new addition to the Premiership as part of a winter re-shuffle, in search of a first league win of the campaign.

Despite back-to-back wins over Rye House Rockets last week in the Premiership Knock-out Cup, Swindon only two points to their name courtesy of a losing bonus point away to Leicester Lions and a draw with Poole last Monday.

Heat leader Adam Ellis returned to action on Easter Sunday following a broken scaphoid injury and while he looked off the pace, Rossiter is confident it was not as a result of his injury and rather an engine issue that they are looking to address before tomorrow’s trip to Somerset Rebels.

“We’ve just got to get ready for Somerset now and look forward to that,” he added.

“We can only take it one meeting at a time and hopefully things will get better.

“Adam is fine, there is nothing wrong with his wrists, he was just struggling with his motors (on Sunday) and he is going away now hopefully to work on it and get that sorted.”
