SWINDON Robins made it back-to-back away wins in the SGB Premiership with a stunning Bank Holiday Monday success away at Poole Pirates today.

Having claimed their first league win of the year at Somerset Rebels on April 21, Alun Rossiter’s side proved that was no flash in the pan with a stunning performance at Wimborne Road.

A pre-meeting shower made for a slippery track on the south coast but Swindon flew out of the blocks and three maximum victories in the first four races saw them storm ahead and they still led 29-15 after seven races.

Poole came back strongly in the second half of the meeting but the visitors were not to be denied and clung on to inflict a rare defeat on the Pirates in front of their own fans.

Swindon skipper Jason Doyle led the way for his side with 13+1 points, while Nick Morris was not far behind on 12, with the duo’s 3-3 draw behind Hans Anderson in the final heat enough to get the Robins over the line.

Rossiter said: “We let it slip a little bit. We knew they would come back at us but we felt we were a bit stronger towards the end and that proved the case.

“We got a 4-2 in Heat 13, which was vital, and I always thought David (Bellego) could win Heat 14. Although he didn’t make the best of starts, he managed to split them.

“Then I was always confident that at least one of Jason or Nick could at least split them in Heat 15 and we could get at least three points. We got the 3-3 and that was good enough.

“Jason and Nick and David, especially with his first two wins, were good today. Adam (Ellis) was involved in a couple of 5-1s in his first two races and they were very important.

“I was more than comfortable with the fact we could come here and win.”

The Robins got off to a dream start as Doyle nailed the start in Heat One and was away and clear, with Bradley Wilson-Dean riding nicely behind to keep Jack Holder at bay to secure an opening maximum for the visitors.

That was the first of three 5-1 wins for Swindon in the first four races as they were bolder and braver on a greasy track to open up a sizeable advantage.

Although Nicolai Klindt won Heat Two for Poole, Zach Wajtknecht and Emil Grondal ensured the points were shared before the momentum swiftly swung back Swindon’s way.

David Bellego and Adam Ellis flew out of the traps in the next race and it was those two who duelled in bends one and two, with the former nosing clear to take the victory.

The visitors repeated the trick in the next head as Morris led home Wajtknecht to make it three Swindon maximums in the first four races.

No one was catching Doyle after another beauty of a start in Heat Five but Poole did manage to stop the rot by sharing the points when Wilson-Dean fell.

With his side 21-9 down, Pirates boss Neil Middleditch rolled the dice in Heat Six and sent out number one Krzysztof Kasprzak on a tactical ride but Morris followed skipper Doyle's lead to make it two wins from two rides for himself to limit the damage.

Swindon were soon back to form and another 5-1 victory arrived in Heat Seven, although this one was the closest so far. Bellego and Ellis squeezed out the Poole pair into bend one and although Anderson battled back and looked to have got ahead of Ellis for second, the Robins man grabbed it back on the line as the visitors opened up a 14-point cushion.

There was a rare moment for the home fans to cheer in the next race as Klindt led home Holder for a Poole maximum before Morris continued his perfect run with a belter of a start in Heat Nine, although the points were shared.

A second Pirates 5-1 in three races gave something for Swindon to think about after Heat 10 as their lead was cut to 34-28. Holder nailed the start but the Robins pair of Bellego and Ellis seemed to have the measure of Kasprzak, only for him to muscle his through, with Bellego going down in the process.

However, Swindon’s lead was not going to be surrendered if Doyle had anything to do with it as an unstoppable front-running ride saw him make it three wins from three races as Heat 11 was shared.

Klindt was having a cracking meet for Poole and collected his third win of the night in the next, with a bit of an iffy start for the Robins proving costly as Ellis could not get by Lewis Kerr to deny the hosts a maximum.

In Heat 13, Doyle continued his imperious form as although Anderson seemed to have the measure of him in bends one and two on lap one, the Swindon skipper was bold into bends three and four to move ahead before Kasprzak retired from third to promote Morris.

There was a cracking battle out front in Heat 14 as Brady Kurtz eventually edged ahead of Bellego to take the win, with Poole’s 4-2 success cutting Swindon’s overall lead to 44-42 to ensure the result remained in the balance heading into the finale.

Anderson had not given up turning the meeting around for the hosts in Heat 15 and he stormed clear out of the gates but Morris pursued him and Doyle brilliantly held off Kurtz to ensure the points were shared and the Robins clung on for overall victory.
