SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle believes claiming a double figure points tally at every Grand Prix will be crucial in his world championship challenge as he resumes his tilt at the title at the Czech GP tonight.

Australian Doyle heads to the fourth meeting of the year in Prague this evening as the only man to qualify for every final in the SGP Series so far in 2017.

The 31-year-old claimed a haul of 10 points en route to finishing fourth at the Latvian GP last time out – his lowest tally in this year’s competition – and he currently sits second overall with 37 points, just one behind Poland’s Patryk Dudek at the head of the pack.

Just eight points separate the top eight riders in the standings so with a closely-fought competition likely to go right to the wire until the finale in Melbourne in October, Doyle knows consistent running will be key to his chances of success.

Speaking to the SGP’s official website, Doyle admitted he was fortunate to finish with such a solid points haul in Latvia a fortnight ago after a shaky start to the meeting but is keen to get back to his best and continue his strong form this weekend.

“After my fourth ride, I was only on five points, so it could have gone a lot worse. I got out of jail a little bit, finishing on 10 points,” said Doyle, who has a best result of third this year at the Warsaw GP on May 13.

“There’s still a long way to go. We didn’t lose a lot of points and we have gained on the top boys.

“Making every final is ideal, but bagging the points is vital. If you get 12 points at every Grand Prix, you’re going to be up there at the end. It’s not like last year, where you could go out and get 17 points. It’s a tough field.”

Despite his excellent performances so far in 2017, Doyle has just one podium finish to his name, an engine blow-out in the final in Latvia scuppering his chances of adding to that haul in the last meeting.

He said: “To have two breakdowns in one meeting was devastating. To make it all the way to the final, be in second and have the bike stop was a nightmare. You work very hard to get to the final and don’t get the satisfaction at the end.”

Doyle will return to a Marketa Stadium track tonight that holds plenty of fond memories for him as the Prague venue was the scene of his maiden SGP triumph a year ago as he went agonisingly close to winning the overall title.
