ALUN Rossiter admits riders only have a limited window left to impress him before the Great Britain boss finalises his team for this summer’s World Cup.

Rossiter revealed an initial 10-man squad for this year’s competition on Sunday ahead of the start of GB’s campaign at World Cup Event One at King’s Lynn on July 1.

The Swindon Robins team manager must now whittle the group down to a final team of five, which has to be confirmed a week before that meeting at the Adrian Flux Arena.

Craig Cook, Danny King, Robert Lambert and Swindon’s Adam Ellis have all been named in the initial squad, having helped GB claim a World Cup silver medal on home soil last year, with Scott Nicholls, Chris Harris, Kyle Howarth, Richie Worrall, Steve Worrall and Josh Bates completing the line-up.

Rossiter already has a strong understanding of what his final team will look like, with one place likely to go to Cook after he was appointed captain, meaning the clock is ticking for riders to try to change his mind.

“There’s not really that much time left, I have got to get going shortly,” said Rossiter. “It’s not an easy time and I have got to name my squad soon because suits have got to be made and other things like that. I think I am going to have to go with my gut feeling.

“I have probably got three or four names in my head already. In the next couple of days, I will be making my decision on the final five.”

Rossiter will be without the man that inspired them to World Cup silver a year ago, with former world champion Tai Woffinden having made himself unavailable for selection.

Although that may have freed up a space in the squad, Rossiter admits he still has not been able to keep everyone happy.

“It’s tough because there are a lot of people to choose from. Do I go with experience or do I go gung-ho? It’s not an easy job but life is never easy,” said Rossiter.

“You’re always going to upset people and clearly I have upset Richard Lawson (who labelled Rossiter an 'Embarrassment' on Facebook following his omission) by the looks of it.

“Part of the job is making those decisions and we are limited in what we can do. You have to have an U21 at reserve and at this stage, I have named two in Josh Bates and Adam Ellis.

“I am always going to upset somebody along the way but you are limited in what you can pick because of the U21 situation."

Australia will provide Great Britain with the chief opposition at King’s Lynn, with Swindon pair Jason Doyle and Nick Morris having been named in their initial 10-man party.

Czech Republic and the USA will complete the line-up, with the event winners qualifying for the World Cup final in Poland on July 8 and the second and third-placed teams progressing to a Race Off a day earlier.
