FRENCHMAN David Bellego wants to help Swindon Robins make the perfect start to their SGB Premiership title defence next week, despite being halted by the persistent rain so far.

The Robins were due to start their Premiership campaign against Leicester Lions at the Abbey Stadium a week ago, but poor weather forced the meeting off – delaying Alun Rossiter’s side any league action before their trip to Wolverhampton Wolves next Monday.

There was a further setback on Easter Monday when both legs of Swindon’s Knockout Cup double header against Rye House Rockets were postponed due to further rain.

It means the Robins have raced just two meetings thus far this season, but that’s two more than many of their Premiership rivals that have also been left frustrated by the weather – including Poole Pirates, Wolves and Somerset Rebels.

While Bellego has been limited in track time, he did score 7+1 as Robins lost 48-42 against Belle Vue Aces in the first leg of the Charity Shield at the National Speedway Stadium before registering 10+1 from five rides in the second leg at the Abbey Stadium, a meeting which the home side won 52-38.

Bellego said: “It was nice for us to win against Belle Vue over the two legs, a good way for us to start the season.

“Now we have to get down to the league business and get some points on the board. It’s been a long winter and we can’t wait to get some meetings under our belt now.”

Robins have five league fixtures throughout April now following the swift rescheduling of the club’s home tie against Leicester.

Rossiter’s men travel to Wolverhampton on April 9 to start their Premiership campaign before hosting the Lions at the Abbey Stadium three days later.

A trip to Poole follows on the April 18 before a home tie against King’s Lynn Stars 24 hours later.

The month is rounded off with another clash against Leicester, this time away from home, on April 23.
