SWINDON Robins boss Alun Rossiter says his feet remain firmly on the ground despite his side continuing the blistering start to their SGB Premiership title defence last night.

A superb final heat 5-1 maximum saw the Robins complete a sensational comeback win at Leicester Lions, with that result putting them 46-44 ahead at Beaumont Park – the only time they led all night.

The victory was Swindon’s third from as many league meetings in 2018 after last week’s away win at Poole Pirates and home success over King’s Lynn Stars.

By contrast, it took Rossiter’s troops until their 10th fixture last season to reach that tally.

Although his team are already sitting pretty at the top of the standings once again, Rossiter knows it is much too soon to get carried away.

“It was a great performance from all the boys and a great win,” said Rossiter.

“They kept fighting all the way and to get the job done in heat 15 just shows how much they are giving and how much it means to them.

“It has been a fantastic start to the season, but it is still early days yet. There is a hell of a long way to go.

“It is a bit of a role reversal from last year. I hope that isn’t a bad omen, but I would rather get points on the board now instead of having to fight for everything we can get come the end of August.”

The meeting was not without its controversy as Rossiter was left flummoxed by the sport’s rule book after his team got off to a slow start.

Six points in arrears after only four heats, the Robins boss wanted to send out Troy Batchelor as a tactical substitute.

However, the Australian was already destined to be given an additional ride as a rider replacement for the absent David Bellego.

Officials at Beaumont Park deemed Batchelor could not do both, much to Rossiter’s bemusement, with Zach Wajtknecht sent out on rider replacement instead and Nick Morris used as a tactical sub later on.

“The rule contradicts itself really badly,” said Rossiter. “The bottom line is, if you are six points down, you can put whoever you want in. I decided to do that, but then the officials tried to tell me I couldn’t then use Troy for an R/R later on.

“That doesn’t work. Troy was entitled to another ride because he is the one above David in the averages and then you can put one in for a tactical sub.

“I can’t see where I did anything wrong. Troy is able to a tactical sub ride and is also eligible to do one of David Bellego’s rides.

“It is so badly written, but yet again everyone is trying to rush stuff and put things down without thinking about it. There needs to be more thought put into the rule book as it is causing havoc.

“I think they are going to go away and have a good look at it.”
