Rosco happy to make point

SWINDON Robins chief Alun Rossiter buried his initial disappointment to reflect on a hard-fought away point earned at reigning Elite League champions Poole Pirates last night.

Robins, touted as strong favourites to end their 42-year wait for a national title this year, opened their 2009 league campaign with a 48-42 defeat on the south coast.

Rossiter wanted a winning start to their expected title charge, but refused to be downcast as his side were humbled by the fast-starting home side.

“Straight afterwards, I was a little disappointed but at least we came away with a point,’’ he said.

“Everyone was saying we were going to go down there and get the win, but I think that was being a bit disrespectful to Poole.

“They were quicker than us on the night and while I’d rather have won the meeting, I’m happy we got something.’’ Robins, despite winning just two of the night’s 15 heats at Wimborne Road, were in touch throughout and nearly mounted a thrilling late comeback.

Rossiter added: “I was pleased with some of the performances. Travis McGowan (paid nine) was the big plus of the night, but the fact we got so close winning just two races shows that we have good depth in this year’s team.’’

I thought Poole were being touted as weekened with injuries but you'd have never thought so having watched it on Sky Sports. Poole looked a formidable home side and will be a force at home no doubt so a point for Swindon by keeping within 6 points of Poole was quite good. Normally we have got blitzed at Poole and our side looked to have good strength through the team plus there were bike problems for Pavlic and Batchelor early on so could have been even closer. I was quite happy with a point as Poole only got 2 for the win so the new points system this season is spot on and will reward teams more for keeping the match close when still loosing. Stead had the ride of the night in heat 13 and looked to be trying his heart out. Travis was excellent and could be the bargain we hoped for last season.
