WITH Swindon’s underwhelming Elite League campaign winding down, it’s time to celebrate some of the more positive aspects of 2010 as we ask you to vote for your Swindon Advertiser Robins Rider of the Year.
And to say LEIGH ADAMS is the favourite for this year’s title would be something of an understatement.
The Aussie has scooped the award six seasons on the spin and this campaign is his last before retirement, but that’s not to say that a win for the Blunsdon legend would be purely based on sentiment.
Adams has been one of the top riders in the Elite League after turning in consistently expert performances, and there will be a big points gap to plug when he departs.
Another who has had an excellent season is SIMON STEAD. Along with Adams, the Sheffield-born rider is probably the only Robins man who can honestly say he has performed at a high level throughout.
The ex-Coventry charger has added the best part of a point on his average and has had a super season individually, reaching the final of the Grand Prix Challenge and being re-selected for Team GB’s World Cup squad.
MADS KORNELIUSSEN was on the brink of the sack in May following an underwhelming start to 2010, with the Dane finding himself under fire from management and fans alike.
But the likeable 27-year-old got his act together mid-season and has now hauled himself to above his starting average.
British racing has been a new experience for GRZEGORZ ZENGOTA in 2010, but the young Polish ace is steadily starting to become a major weapon for the Robins.
The World Under 21 Team Cup winner is well and truly dialled in to the Abbey Stadium circuit and is beginning to improve on the away tracks where he struggled in the opening months.
When he has not been banned, injured or unavailable, THOMAS H. JONASSON has been a breath of fresh air for the Robins faithful.
Beginning at reserve, the Swede shredded his starting average and his all-action displays have provided many a talking point, with his paid 14 haul at Eastbourne on the opening night a particular highlight.
There might not be a nicer man in speedway, but 2010 has been shocking for MORTEN RISAGER, while a similarly frustrating time has been had by fellow reserves CORY GATHERCOLE and JORDAN FRAMPTON.
JUSTIN SEDGMEN has had a developmental year in the lower order, while MACIEJ JANOWSKI arrived late in the day and has raced just three times for his new club.
