SPEEDWAY: Robins back among the trophies
Robins celebrate with the trophy last night
Robins celebrate with the trophy last night

ROBINS scooped their first piece of top-flight team silverware for 41 years last night with an impressive 98-87 aggregate win over old foes Coventry Bees in the Elite Shield.

Swindon went down 52-41 on the night, but Sunday's spectacular 22-point triumph put the Blunsdon boys on the road to glory.

Skipper Leigh Adams took the sting out of the Bees with a 14-point haul, to add to his paid maximum the previous night as Swindon savoured the sweet taste of champagne at the expense of their bitter rivals.

Team boss Alun Rossiter was delighted with the win, as Robins celebrated a first top-flight speedway success since they were crowned British League champions way back in 1967.

Rosco said: "It was really good to beat Coventry at the fourth time of trying.

"It might only be the Elite Shield, but believe me, they wanted to win this one too.

"We were always confident we could do it - but I wanted to get a few points on the board away from home because that's where people said we would struggle.

"We've still got a bit to do - a couple of riders need to up their game - but it's going to take time to bed in and I believe they will get better.

"As I said, the team spirit is fantastic and hopefully this will spur us on to bigger things.''
