BREAKING NEWS: Robins see off Wolves

9:50pm Thursday 24th April 2008

By Gareth Moorhouse »

ROBINS continue to set the early pace in the Sky Sports Elite League after an impressive 50-42 triumph over Wolverhampton Wolves at Blunsdon tonight.

Skipper Leigh Adams and James Wright powered out of the gate in heat one, but the young Englishman was caught by Freddie Lindgren on the back straight as Robins recorded a 4-2.

Seb Alden led from tapes-to-flag in two, but guest rider Tomas Suchanek was well off the pace in fourth as Wolves shared the spoils.

Neils-Kristian Iversen showed his Grand Prix calibre in three as he left Aussies Troy Batchelor and Travis McGowan trailing in his wake.

In four, Mads Korneliussen stormed to his first chequered flag of the night, but the real action came in the battle for third, as Nicolai Klindt and Alden traded places before the Wolverhampton rider stole the point on the final lap.

Batchelor and McGowan provided Robins' first maximum of the night in five, although the latter had to hold off a strong challenge from Lindgren, who briefly flirted with second place.

The imperious Adams glided to another heat win in six, but again Wright failed to latch onto his rear tyre as David Howe limited the damage to just 4-2 in favour of Swindon.

Heat seven went to a re-run after both Wolves riders hit the shale. Iversen was excluded after he went spiralling into the fence when leading on lap three courtesy of a broken chain.

But the remaining Klindt dusted off his leathers and flew out of the traps to win the re-run and salvage a 3-3 for the visitors.

Alden was penalised for touching the tapes in eight, and Robins boss Alun Rossiter took the opportunity to introduce Suchanek for his third ride of the night.

The Czech star repaid Rosco's faith with a two-point ride, Alden grabbing third with Klindt well out in front for Wolves.

Wolverhampton employed the tactical ride in heat nine, as skipper Lindgren came from 15 metres back to steal second from McGowan on the final bend. Batchelor's second successive heat win ensured a 4-4 split.

Adams made light work of heat 10, but again Wright limped out of the gate as Iversen and Klindt powered into the remaining point-scoring positions.

Klindt continued his superb form to breeze to victory in 11, and Lindgren followed him home for Wolves first 5-1 of the night.

Iversen and Hefenbrock then upset the odds to claim another Wolves maximum in heat 12 and the scores were level at 37-37.

But Adams produced a superb team ride in 13, waiting what seemed like an age for Korneliussen to join him on the back straight as the Dane eventually powered through for a 5-1 to Swindon.

Robins wrapped up another home win in the penultimate heat, McGowan and Alden gating well and holding off the challenge of the in-form Klindt.

And Adams sent out a message to his Grand Prix rivals Iversen and Lindgren in 15, coming from third off the gate to finish his night with another impresive heat win.
