TRACKSIDE: Giddy heights as youngsters really come of age

WHAT a great week for the Robins!

Monday night's win at Belle Vue saw us move to the top of the Elite League for the first time this year, before Thursday's home success over Wolves pulled us clear of our closest rivals Eastbourne, as they slipped to defeat at Ipswich.

The meeting in Manchester underlined what a promising septet the Swindon management have put together, with every rider contributing to the success.

That enabled skipper Leigh Adams the rare luxury of watching heat 15 from the sidelines because by then the three priceless away points were already heading back to Wiltshire.

Special mention must go to two of our young guns' James Wright and Cory Gathercole, who both put on season's best performances to the delight of those of us tuned in on the radio.

James even had the audacity to lead former world champion Jason Crump round his own track for the first three laps of heat one on the way to nine points, while Cory went one better in scoring paid 10 from reserve. Great stuff!

Thursday night at the Abbey brought us a routine eight-point win over our friends from the Midlands, despite the best efforts of their high-scoring reserve Nicolai Klindt, who registered an impressive paid 15 points.

Once again Leigh Adams was at his imperious best with another paid maximum, and he enjoyed solid back-up all down the card from the supporting cast.

Troy (Batchelor), Travis (McGowan) and Mads (Korneliussen) were all paid for nine points, and even our guest Tomas Suchanek got in on the act with paid four.

Monday sees the Sky cameras in town for the visit of Lee Richardson and the Eastbourne Eagles.

But before then all eyes will be on the start of this year's world championship at the Slovenian Grand Prix tonight.

Leigh will clearly be looking to go one better than last year's second place, although the challenge from the likes of Nicki Pedersen, Jason Crump and Hans Andersen will be as strong as ever.

It's a mouth-watering prospect!

I'll down at Alun Rossiter's pub The New Inn ready for the tapes to rise at around 6pm, and am sure that many other Robins fans will be doing the same.

Rosco would do well to check his insurance before then, because if Leigh takes the chequered flag at the end of night the roof could come off. Fingers crossed!
