TRACKSIDE: Bees victory a tonic after two away defeats

DESPITE two defeats on the road, an anxious last-heat win over Coventry at the Abbey on Thursday has enabled the Robins to continue to peer down on their closest challengers from the top of the Elite League standings.

Last Saturday night saw Swindon in action at Eastbourne, and with the weather set fair, my wife and I decided to head down to Sussex and make a day of it.

A lazy afternoon on the beach was followed by a fantastic meal at a pub just south of the track, as recommended to me by a Wolves fan who had been there weeks before.

I'd not been to Arlington before, and I must say that I was impressed. The home fans were friendly, the viewing was excellent, and it was easy to get a drink!

Well over 100 hardy souls had made the trip from Wiltshire and were grouped on the second bend ready to cheer their team in the early summer sunshine.

The meeting was a cracker, with every heat closely contested and never more than a four-point gap between the sides.

Swindon carved out an early lead, the Eagles pulled it back, and after a late rally from the Robins we arrived at Heat 15 with the sides locked on 42 all.

For once it was heartbreak, as British GP star Scott Nicholls out-manoeuvred Leigh Adams in the race for the chequered flag and Eddie Kennett won the race with Travis McGowan for third place, to ensure a home win by the narrowest of margins, 46-44.

Poole on Monday lived up to their league favourites billing, and beat Swindon easily in front of the Sky TV cameras on a night that lady luck shined sweetly on the men from Dorset.

I don't expect anyone to visit them and plunder the three points for an away win this season.

Back home on Thursday, Leigh put Saturday's disappointment firmly behind him.

After the two previous defeats it was important just to win, but nonetheless the form of McGowan and Pijper remains a concern.

If we are to kick on at the top of the table, there could be some tough decisions ahead.
