WILTSHIRE swimmers Stephanie Millward and Aaron Moores claimed the first Paralympic medals of their careers at London’s Aquatics Centre last night. Millward clinched silver in the women’s S9 100m backstroke, the 30-year-old from Corsham clocking 1:11.07 to finish second behind Australia’s Ellie Cole, whose winning time of 1:09.42 was a new Oceania record. Millward, who trains in Swansea, was the second fastest qualifier behind Cole in this yesterday’s heats and lived up to her billing last night, even though her time was slower than the morning session. Millward said: “A silver medal is incredible. “Who’d have thought I’d have won a Paralympic medal? “I am so proud. I feel on top of the world really - I don’t know what I would have felt like if I had won gold, I probably would be crying right now.” Under an hour later, Trowbridge teenager Moores followed Millward onto the podium as he clinched silver in the S14 men’s 100m backstroke. The 18-year-old, from Trowbridge Swimming Club, touched home in 1:04.44, beaten only by a new world record from Dutch rival Marc Evers (1:01.85). Moores’ clubmate, 13-year-old Chloe Davies, narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s S14 100m backstroke, finishing fifth in 1:10.10, having qualified fastest from the morning heats.
