SWINDON swimmer Craig Harris added a hat-trick of medals to his already impressive collection at the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games in Sheffield this weekend – despite nearly breaking his wrist in his opening race.

The Corsham Swim Club star was a triple gold medallist at last year’s School Games in London but hit the wall hard with his hand during the multi-disability 100m backstroke on Saturday and had to settle for silver.

However he returned to his unbeatable best on Sunday and bagged gold in both the 200m individual medley and the 100m butterfly.

It was Harris’ second time at the Games – a major multi-sport event that saw more than 1,600 young people compete accross 12 sports.

And the 14-year-old was delighted to continue his golden success at the event especially having only just returned to training for the start of the season.

“I’ve only been training for two weeks so doing some of my personal bests is amazing,” he said. “It’s setting a target, so because I’ve set good times here it means over the year I’ll progress more.

“I was trying to go for triple gold again but unfortunately I injured my wrist during the swim when I hit the wall with it. But I’ve only been training for two weeks so doing some of my PBs is amazing.

“This is my second school games and it’s really good and I would say it’s better than last year. I’m more prepared, and it’s over two days as well so it makes it easier.

“The atmosphere is good, there’s not as many people as in London but it’s still good. The best thing is meeting new people and seeing friends.”

After kicking off the season well Harris is now turning his attention to qualifying for the Commonwealth Games.

And after impressing with some fast times in the Steel City he believes he is capable of reducing his PBs further and making the English team.

“I haven’t planned too far ahead but I will just be training hard in the next few weeks. The aim will be to get my times down,” he added.

“My target is the trials for the Commonwealth Games. I just need to work hard and I can’t say how likely it is. I’ll just try my best and I'll go there to try and make a final and that’s it.”

The Sainsbury's 2013 School Games, which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, was held in venues across Sheffield from 12-15 September 2013. Visit www.2013schoolgames.com for more information.
