JAZZ Carlin failed to deliver a medal on her first outing at the Commonwealth Games – but she’s got a feeling that won’t be the case for long.

The 23-year-old former Swindon Tigershark enjoyed a fine Commonwealth Games debut at Delhi 2010 as she claimed silver and bronze before suffering a cruel time of things in 2012.

It was in the 200m freestyle that Carlin claimed silver four years ago and it was that event in which she opened her Glasgow 2014 campaign this evening.

The outcome wasn’t as good as she had to settle for sixth in 1:57.26 minutes as Australian Emma McKeon took gold ahead of England’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor.

But with Carlin only getting started in the pool she’s adamant she can medal once more and prove herself to be among the world’s best distance freestyle swimmers.

“The 200 isn’t my strongest – it’s probably the weakest of my three events but when you’re in a race you obviously want to be on the podium,” she said.

“I can’t complain – two best times so it was a really solid day and I’m looking forward to the rest of the week now.

“I haven’t really done a lot of speed work so I was quite surprised to do a best time in the morning.

“To back it up again was a bonus and to be in with a strong field of athletes means it’s a great race to be involved in. But my focus is towards the end of the week.”

Meanwhile Tilly Gray missed her chance to race in a first final in Glasgow as she failed to navigate her way through to the 100m butterfly final.

With the top eight reaching the medal showdown, Gray placed 13th overall in the semi-finals with a time of 1:00.66 – England’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor the quickest in 57.57.
