SWINDON’S Jazz Carlin is hoping to create history in the pool when she helps Europe’s best swimmers take on America.

The 25-year-old is part of a seven-strong contingent of British swimmers who have travelled to Indianapolis to join up with the European Allstars ahead of the Duel in the Pool.

The bi-annual competition, which sees Europe’s top swimmers take on a select team from across the Atlantic including Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte, starts today with the women’s 400m freestyle one of 14 races, before the event is concluded on Saturday, with the women’s 800m freestyle one of 16 races.

America’s streak of team victories, which dates back to when Europe entered the competition in 2009, was threatened in 2013 but a narrow victory in the tie-breaking mixed medley relay gave the States the win.

Now Carlin is hoping to aid Europe to their first win and the absence of fierce rival Katie Ledecky from the American team could assist that.

“I think the European team are in with a good chance,” she said after the European Short Course Championships.

“The people I’ve raced against this week will be on my team so there’ll be good rivalry, but hopefully we can stick together to help Europe win.

“Some of these girls I race against are my friends, but I also really want to beat them.

“Hopefully for the first year ever we can beat America.”

Carlin is happy with her recent form heading into an Olympic year having claimed two gold medals at the European Short Course Championships in Israel.

The Tigersharks swimmer clocked a new personal best time of 3 minutes 58.81 seconds to claim the 400m crown, pipping Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu to the touch.

“It’s been a good meet to be a part of and it’s about building on that in an Olympic year,” she added.

“I’m hoping it has set me in a good place ahead of the next block of training which will lead in to the Olympic trials.”
