WILTSHIRE’S Jazz Carlin has guaranteed herself a spot at Rio 2016 after taking gold in the 400m freestyle at the British Swimming Championships this evening inside the Olympic qualifying time.

It is the Swindon swimmer’s third title of the championships, having also triumphed in the 200m and 800m freestyle in Glasgow, but the first time she has finished inside the selection time set by British Swimming.

Carlin, who lives in Bradford on Avon, came home in 4mins 04.33secs at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, 0.33secs inside the qualifying mark.

She finished more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Eleanor Faulkner, with Alice Dearing taking the bronze medal.

The 25-year-old missed out on a place at London 2012 four years ago because of illness and was visibly emotional in the pool after the race after booking her place at this summer’s Games.

Carlin may still secure other swims in Rio as British Swimming selectors can use their discretion to pick her for both the 200m and 800m as well.
