JAZZ Carlin kicked off her Mare Nostrum series with a win in the 800m final in Canet this evening.

Having sat out the opening Monte Carlo stage of the three-meeting series, Carlin was in action on the opening day in Canet-en-Roussillon.

The 25-year-old, from Swindon, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, claimed a win in the 800m freestyle final with a time of 8 minutes 25.23 seconds, just shy of 10 seconds off her personal best set in 2014.

Carlin finished 8.45 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, the Netherland’s Sharon Van Rouwendaal, with Slovakia’s Tjasa Oder third to claim 897 points.

Meanwhile, Carlin had to settle for a sixth-placed finish in the A final of the 200m freestyle with a time of 1 minute 58.60, 1.72 seconds off her personal best time set last year.

Carlin was just under two seconds behind eventual winner Charlotte Bonnet, of France, who finished in a time of 1:56.84.

The Tigersharks swimmer had qualified for the final this morning when she finished fifth quickest with a time of 1 minute 59.20 seconds.

Carlin, who went in the penultimate heat, was 1.05 seconds off the pace set by Hungary’s Katinka Long.

Carlin’s sixth place finish gave her an additional 864 points to leave her tally for the series on 1,761 points with a swim in the 400m freestyle tomorrow still to go before heading to Barcelona this weekend for the final meeting of the series.
