PURTON gave their hopes of survival in WEPL Wiltshire a huge shot in the arm with a narrow seven-run success away at Marlborough.

The result pushed Aaron Lee’s side up to fifth from bottom in the table and they now have a 21-point cushion over Marlborough, who are third from bottom.

Tom Bowler’s unbeaten 59 and 49 from Sizwe Masondo helped Purton to a score of 192-5, although Marlborough’s target was adjusted to 196 because of rain.

The home side went agonisingly close in their run chase, with Morlon Simon leading the way with 62, but Purton dug in and finally dismissed last man Mohan Balusu with Marlborough just short on 189 all out.

Swindon came off second best in a low-scoring encounter at home to Devizes, going down by four wickets.

Alex Kill’s side posted just 85 as Devizes captain Tom Grant took five wickets, with the visitors edging over the winning line on 86-6.

Royal Wootton Bassett were unable to stop Trowbridge’s march towards the title as they fell to a hefty 165-run defeat at the league leaders.

Brad Angel took 7-27 to blow Bassett away for 102 in reply to Trowbridge’s 267-5, which was anchored by Matthew Hopkins’ 123.
