SWINDON boxer Kelvin Young believes an elusive stoppage is just around the corner.

Each of the 26-year-old’s 12 career victories to date have gone to the judges’ scorecards with a knockout the glaring omission from his record.

But following top-class sparring with the likes world champion Carl Froch and Olympic bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo, Young believes he is now capable of winning inside the distance.

Super-middleweight Young returns to the ring on Saturday, May 11 when he takes on Hampshire’s Sam Couzens at Gloucester’s GL1 Leisure Centre.

The former Penhill amateur boxer stopped short of a prediction for his next fight but told the Advertiser a long-awaited knockout will come soon.

“Obviously I have been sparring the likes of Carl Froch and Anthony Ogogo up in Sheffield,” said Young. “I am holding my own against them and I am feeling stronger and stronger all the time.

“I am filling out at super middleweight and I think I’m going to take someone out in one of my next few fights.

“I’m not going to say I’m going to knockout Sam Couzens or make any bold predictions but I feel stronger and a knockout is just around the corner.

“I feel I am going to start knocking people out soon and it could come in the next fight.

“Both Carl and Anthony have told me they are surprised I have not had a knockout yet because they recognise I do have power.”

The fight against Couzens is likely to be a six-round affair and Young, who is the reigning Southern Area super-middleweight champion, is expecting an opponent who comes to fight.

“He will come forward,” said Young.

“He likes to fight on the front foot so the gameplan will be to stop him doing that.

“I don’t think he will be a tricky opponent but I have to be wary and I cannot get dragged into a war.

“He has a mixed record because he wins are against decent opponents and then he has lost to some lesser guys.

“The main thing is to stick to gameplan my trainer gives me and hopefully I can add another win to my record.”

Also fighting on the bill is Mitch Buckland and Dean Mills, who top the bill in a British Masters lightweight clash.

And from Swindon Joe Beeden returns to action against Ben Zacharkiw.

Tickets cost £35 standard and £60 VIP and there are places available on a coach, priced at £15 each, available.
