JAMIE Cox’s new trainer wants his boxer to take it one fight at a time when he makes his long-awaited comeback on Saturday night.

Newport trainer Tony Borg will be in Cox’s corner on Saturday night when the boxer returns following 18 months of inactivity after breaking his left hand.

The light-middleweight takes on Frenchman Matiouze Royer at Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre - a fight Borg believes is the most important of Cox’s career to date.

On paper, the unbeaten former Commonwealth champion should comfortable take care of Royer and put himself in contention for a shot at the British title.

But Borg is not interested in title talk and wants Cox to focus on the immediate job in hand.

“This is a big fight for Jamie,” Borg told the Swindon Advertiser. “Every fight is a big fight because if you don’t win your next fight then there may not be another fight.

“I just want Jamie to go out there and show some quality. We know he is tough enough but we need to see his qualities as well.

“His talent is not in question but he needs to go out there and prove it on Saturday night. I just want him to go out there and do a professional job and show the natural boxing ability he has.”

Borg’s Newport gym is home to championship level boxers such as Gary Buckland and Lee Selby, both of whom Cox has sparred in preparation for his comeback.

And Borg believes sparring the likes of Buckland and Selby can only help Cox fulfil his potential.

“He has settled in well,” added Borg, who was crowned Welsh coach of the year in 2012. “He is getting top class sparring here. He has sparred Justyn Hugh (Welsh light-heavyweight champion), Lee Selby (British and Commonwealth featherweight champion), Gary Buckland (British super-featherweight champion) and Frankie Borg (British Masters champion) and has benefited from that and is looking good.

“He’s improved loads to be honest but it is just gym stuff really. Sparring has gone very well but we need to take him into the ring on Saturday and see what he does there.”

Cox’s last fight was in September 2011 when he won the light-middleweight Commonwealth title against Ghanaian Obodai Sai. He broke his left hand during the fight, an injury Borg described as one of the worst he had ever seen.

“It is a very bad injury and we don’t know how the hand will hold up,” Borg added.

“I’ve seen a couple of similar injuries over the years but that is as bad as I have seen.

“If he gets through this fight okay then Jamie will show he can go on and get a title. If the hand does bother him he will be okay because he is a very tough guy and will just stay in there, coast on his right hand and fight on his back foot.”

Borg is reluctant to look further than this fight but admitted Cox has all the potential to win titles galore, adding: “He can certainly reclaim the Commonwealth title and win the British title.

“Then a shot at the European is not out of the question and then it’s onwards and upwards.”

Cox return on Saturday night at the Oasis is on the undercard to Gareth Heard’s bout against Faheem Khan, where the Bradford on Avon welterweight will fight for the vacant International Masters title.

Also on the bill is Trowbridge middleweight NIck Blackwell and Swindon cruiserweight Lawrence Bennett.
