SWINDON Wildcats will be full of confidence going into this weekend’s double-header with Guildford Flames after kicking off the season in style.

Wildcats opened their campaign last weekend with a 4-1 home victory over National League outfit Chelmsford Chieftans in the Challenge Cup, which was followed up with an impressive penalty shootout win away to last year’s champions Manchester Phoenix.

With confidence surging through the squad, head coach Ryan Aldridge insists his side will not be complacent ahead of a tough challenge against Guildford.

“After last weekend’s performance and our training in the week we are going into the weekend confident,” he said.

“I was probably a bit hard on the boys after the cup game about them battling and they came back and did that part of the game exceptionally well against Manchester.

“I think they showed just what can happen when you work hard for the full 60 minutes.

“All the boys are pretty switched on, coming back (from Manchester) they had fun, but they have all worked hard this week and taken it in their stride.

“It is definitely a confidence thing but none of them are arrogant.”

Cats entertain the Surrey side tonight in a match where the points will count for both the league and for the Challenge Cup.

Before heading to the Guildford Spectrum 24 hours later for the reverse fixture.

When the two sides met in February Swindon were on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat and Aldridge says they are not sure what to expect from Guildford who can be a Jeckyll and Hyde type of side.

“We always wanted to do well in the cup this year and on Saturday we will be playing for table points as well so it will be an important game and we just have to keep focus,” he added.

“It is going to be a tough weekend but it depends which Guildford team turns up on the night.

“If we play a strong game we can survive and be successful, but if we try and chase them then it could be worrying.”

Wildcats will be without Floyd Taylor who has not recovered from concussion after being hit in the face by the puck in their win at Manchester.
