JORDAN Turnbull is learning the hard way that despite dominating the ball for the majority of games Swindon Town will not have it all their own way this season.

Saturday’s draw Yeovil was another instance where, for long periods of the match, the hard work and high energy style of the opposition negated Swindon’s spells with the ball at their feet. It was a repeat of the tactics Leyton Orient deployed and most successfully Plymouth Argyle, it meant Town were not allowed to settle into a rhythm.

As a key part of the back three base from which Swindon build their attacks Turnbull was at the coal face of the full press Gary Johnson’s side employed. The on-loan Southampton defender has had to adapt quickly to the opposition energetic closing down having enjoyed an easier ride in early games when tasked with playing out.

The 19-year-old believes it is something Town will have to get to used to, as more teams try to stall their attempts at free-flowing football.

“I think that’s going to be how it is this season. Some games, some teams set out to press us high and we need to work them down,” Turnbull said.

“I think (on Saturday) it showed towards the end how it opened out a lot and we had quite a few chances at the end where we could have clinched the game, even with 10 men.

“Sometimes we need to stick to our style of play, keep doing what we’re doing and hopefully we can grind teams down.

“It showed towards the end it opened out a lot and we had quite a few chances where we could have clinched the game, even with 10 men.

“We came here expecting a tough game, they’ve been on a bad run at home.

“They certainly pressed us from the off and they didn’t run out of steam, until maybe the last 10 minutes when it opened up a bit.

“As you can see it’s tougher to play out but we work on that every day. I think we’ll go back to the training ground again and keep working on it. It’s much tougher when the full press us like that but we stick to our style of play and we think that it works. It’s worked for us so far this season.”
