WOOTTON Bassett coach Alan Low was content with his side’s performance against Thatcham last weekend, despite the hosts’ unbeaten early-season record at Ballard’s Ash coming to an end.

Bassett, who had notched up home wins over Bicester, High Wycombe and Maidenhead going in to Saturday’s clash, suffered a 24-18 defeat at the hands of their high-flying opponents.

Two tries from David Hogg and two penalties and a conversion kicked by Ieuan Clements proved insufficient on the day.

“Results are obviously important but for me, the performance is the thing that matters most. If we’ve performed well and not won the game, then we’ve been beaten by the better side,” said Low.

“I wasn’t exactly livid with the result against Thatcham because I thought that the performance was quite good from us.

“It was just small errors that were the difference. We were missing a few back-rowers and there were times when we broke with the ball in the Thatcham half and couldn’t get the support up in time.

“And then there was one time where we’ve lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, they’ve stolen it and the guy’s scored under the posts – in the end, there was just one score in it, so it shows how important those little errors were.

“We weren’t too far off though and I think there’s plenty we can take out of it.”
