HAMISH Forbes-Keith claimed a late brace of tries as Wootton Bassett romped to a 38-10 victory at Beaconsfield in Southern Counties North.

Alan Low’s side endured a horrendous trip to Buckinghamshire and that had an immediate impact upon kick-off as Bassett fell behind early on.

But the visitors quickly got themselves together and an Andrew Phoenix try, converted by David Hogg, restored parity.

Beaconsfield got back in front with a penalty but Hogg replied with two of his own before converting Gavin Ougan’s try late in the half to put the visitors 20-10 ahead.

Hogg again led the way after the break with a pair of penalties but Bassett had to wait until the dying minutes to get over the whitewash again. Forbes-Keith claimed both scores, with the latter – converted by Hogg – wrapping up the bonus point.

Boss Low said: “We had an absolute nightmare getting up there. There was a jack-knifed lorry on the M4 slip road, so it wasn’t the perfect preparation as it was difficult for the guys to get there.

“I was panicking a bit but Beaconsfield understood everything and were really good about it, and there was a delayed kick-off.

“And then once we got started, we were 7-0 down after three minutes. In your head, you think ‘it’s just going to be one of those days’.

“That was the shock to the system we needed and from then on, we were outstanding from one to 18, right until the final whistle.”

The result saw Bassett climb above Thatcham and they are now up to third in the table with one game to go before Christmas.

“Things have started to come together and we’re showing real character,” added Low.

“When I came in, we thought it would it take a season for everyone to understand what I want but we’ve progressed quickly.

“Saturday was an amazing game and really good to show what we can do when we play with a bit of confidence.”
