MILES Storey is on the brink of another loan move away from Swindon Town and is likely to join Scottish Premier League side St Mirren for the remainder of the season after Northampton pulled out of a deal to sign the 21-year-old.

Earlier this week, the Adver revealed that Scotland would be a likely destination for the young striker as Town seek to get him more first-team game time.

Storey spent the first half of the season on loan at Portsmouth before returning to the County Ground early after being deemed surplus to requirements at Fratton Park.

League Two side Northampton had expressed their interest in signing Storey on loan but that move broke down after Swindon were unable to come to a suitable financial agreement with the Cobblers.

In a statement on their website tonight, the Sixfields club said they pulled out after being asked to pay a weekly contribution higher than the striker's actual weekly wage.

The statement said: "Northampton Town can confirm that the deal to sign Miles Storey on loan from Swindon Town won't currently be proceeding.

"Northampton Town and Swindon Town had verbally agreed for the striker to spend the rest of the season on loan at Sixfields but during the completion of paperwork, it became clear the club were being asked to pay a weekly contribution higher than the striker's actual weekly wage."

Cobblers manager Chris Wilder said: "We will pay the wages of a player but we aren't being lulled into paying a loan fee for a 21-year-old.

"That's not how we do things and we move on. Miles was one of a number of targets and there is no way we are being led into paying what was effectively a loan fee for a young player.

"We will do a deal if it is right for us but we won't if not. If Swindon want to pick up the phone and agree a deal to cover his wages, that's fine, but we aren't sitting around waiting, we are moving on."

The 21-year-old is now thought to have travelled to Scotland yesterday in order to start a two-day training period at St Mirren ahead of a potential loan switch until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Town are set to be dealt a blow amid fears midfielder Ben Gladwin is likely to be ruled out for up to four weeks through injury.

Gladwin missed the 3-1 weekend win at home to Chesterfield with a knee problem and was later sent for a scan to ascertain a full diagnosis.

Town boss Mark Cooper initially did not expect that to put Gladwin’s participation in their next match away at Sheffield United on Saturday week in doubt but the injury now seems to be worse than first feared.

Gladwin is thought to require a minor operation to alleviate the problem and it could take him up to a month to recover, meaning he could miss Swindon’s next four games.
