JOHNNY Varey made history when he stepped into the ring at Merlin’s Bridge ABC.
The 12-year-old was the first boxer to compete for the newly-formed Cirencester ABC, which is led by former Penhill ABC coach Simon Knowles.
And fighting in the 38 kilogram division, Varey claimed an unamious points decision against Lewis Barrow.
The Welsh youngster came flying out of the traps, however, Varey was boxing well behind the jab and managed to fire off several combinations.
In the secound round, Varey used his experience to turn Barrows and land more combination punches.
This was the pattern throughout the fight, with Varey winning easily.
Fifteen-year-old Dave Davis was next out for the Nelson’s Inn based club and he faced Cameron Barrows in a 57kg contest.
This was Davis’ first bout in more than a year and in the opening round he used his jab to good affect as Barrows attempted to smother.
Davis battled back gamely throughout the bout but found himself pinned against the ropes in what was a highly-entertaining fight.
