SWINDON TOWN: Williams warns Town not to let Stags do the double

9:50am Thursday 19th April 2007

ADY Williams says Town's players should embrace the opportunity to record a rare professional feat on Saturday and he isn't talking about promotion!

While the speediest possible elevation to League One is top priority, the injured skipper insists Mansfield's visit is a chance to avoid a double' dose of the blues.

No team has had the satisfaction of taking six points from Town this season and only one side has the chance to thwart Paul Sturrock's impeccable record on that front - the Stags.

Williams hopes such a record means as much to his colleagues as it does to him.

And as the 35-year-old makes his first steps on the road back to fitness, Williams said: "One thing that has maybe been overlooked this week is the fact that Mansfield could do the double over us on Saturday.

"That isn't a statistic that would sit well with me at all and for me, it would be my key motivation ahead of the Mansfield game.

"You don't get many chances in your career, if any, to say nobody did the double over us' and it would be something each of the lads could take a great deal of pride in.

"Of course, if avoiding being on the end of a double got us where we all want to go come 4.45 then I don't think anybody will be complaining about that."

Over confidence and complacency are potential concerns but then Williams insists Mansfield memories should help on that front as well.

He said: "Maybe the gaffer could threaten to show the DVD of the game up at their place if he sees any signs of that?

"I don't think he will but there's no question that that match is the one often used as an example and referred to (December's 2-0 Field Mill reverse) when the manager is highlighting the things he doesn't want to see."

Williams will be restricted to a role shouting encouragement on Saturday but he is at least making tentative steps towards regaining fitness after knee surgery.

He said: "I have done a bit of work on the bike and I'm getting there with the knee in terms of the bend and extension.

"I'll keep working hard and I go back for a check in the next week or so."
