DOCTORS looking after Darcy Ward have said that they should have more information about his condition in the next 48 hours.

The Robins number one underwent surgery on Sunday night following a horror crash in heat 15 of the meeting between GKM Grudziadz and Zielona Gora.

The extent of Ward’s injuries remain unclear at this stage, but, in a brief press conference this lunchtime, Dr Robert Zapotocznego revealed the 23-year-old was conscious and speaking.

“After a two-and-a half hour operation for Darcy Ward, there is no problem with breathing so he can breathe without any troubles,” he said.

“He can react and he can talk and recognise people.

“Former world champion Chris Holder, his great friend, has resigned to race tonight at Wimborne Road, in the Elite League clash between Poole Pirates and Swindon Robins (which has been postponed), so he can be by his side along with his two mechanics.

“In the world of medicine, there are two words that shouldn’t exist at all - they are ‘never’ and ‘always’.

“We know how the progress can be fabulous in terms of knowledge and how the doctors these days can react.

“They can fight against disease or, in some special circumstances, can make miracles happen.

“We do believe in the next two days we will be able to update what is going on with Darcy Ward’s situation, considering what happened last night.

“Leave us 48 hours to be more precise.”

Ward’s father Brian is expected to fly to Poland to be by his son’s side and a Zielona Gora spokesman has thanked the support shown by the fans.

“On behalf of the club, I would like to say a big thank you to all the supporters and I really appreciate what they have done,” he said.

“We want to say a big thank you to the speedway family for what they have done for Darcy.”
